There was a time when night time used to be my most productive hours. Anything with even a hint of creativity was produced during those …

There was a time when night time used to be my most productive hours. Anything with even a hint of creativity was produced during those hours. Then came business school bundled with reports, presentations and projects. I am not saying they didn’t interest me, in fact the presentations always appealed to the creative person in me but while energy was spent creating good looking, strong reports the paper & pen were separated and writing for passion was lost.

Nothing permanent though, at least that is how I like to think of it. Though to be honest, its been ages since I have produced anything of substance. Continuing with the chronology, then came work. The alleged 9 to 5 life; such a sham, for everyone knows there is no “to 5.” It starts when it says it starts but it ends never. The 9 is just a number to reset the clock to zero and then we count another twenty-four from there. Such a waste of a perfectly beautiful life.

Again, not that I mind the 9 to 5. I am one of those few crazy ones who actually love work. Of course, the periodic bickering is something which goes hand in hand with the lifestyle because without it you might just become a social pariah. Come to think of it, there is a considerable shortfall in my workplace social circle primarily because deep down I refuse to indulge in pointless bitching about the injustices suffered by the few hardworking men in the corporate jungle.

But we digress; point is, with the day to day tedium of work life along with the curse of pleasure in achieving something of magnitude at the end of the day the mental faculties are completely exhausted to generate anything which might have semblance of creativity.

Something else has changed during this time. Mornings apparently have become the most intellectually stimulating hour of the day for me. I can imagine 20 year old me staring in horror at the statement I have just me, coupled with a feeling of disgust and a nagging urge to throw up at the monster that I have become, but that’s the way of things. Sadly though, the whole energy of the morning is spent in earning the bread & enjoying earning the bread.

So while I left home this morning with a couple of exciting ideas to pen and would most probably drive back in a little while with another thought brewing in my head, by the time I would reach the comfort of my home and the company of my amazing wife all would be lost. With nightfall it would be a brain skimming through the priorities of the coming morning and rearranging them in the order of some useless priority.

And that my friend is an introduction to why I don’t write. Such a waste!

There is something strangely romantic about the loud, borderline filthy & yet remarkably magnificent Empress Market of our beloved Karachi. While the road out is swarmed with buses, barrows, bird hawkers & multitude of pedestrians; once you cross the threshold of the centuries old Empress Market you are suddenly introduced to a remarkably contrasting world.

A world filled with pitch of the vegetable vendors, debates of haggling buyers & calls of boys asking to carry your bags for you in hopes of being tipped for their little service. A world drenched in varying scents of damp soil, assorted spices & fresh greens made extremely pleasing with the sight made by the magnificent splendor of the assorted colors.

Sunset is a time of the day when if you actually follow the movement of the sun in the horizon you can almost see the sun moving across the landscape, notice the shadows change size and ultimately disappear as nightfall prevails. If you happen to have a camera and just a little bit of patience while all of this is happening you can capture all of this and truthfully no one would believe that the series was captured in a span of possibly half an hour. Though, the pictures below would definitely disagree with those who wont believe in the difference minutes can make at sunset.
